BUSINESS

The main business of the company J.E. Protein Handelsgesellschaft m.b.H. (in short JEP), founded in 1985 had been to deal with the marketing and logistics of residues from pharmaceutical manufacturers for converting the same into nutritional feed for animals. The company had also been exploring the opportunities in the related fields of residues having a value added for selected companies. Residues had been e-g. meat meal, fat residues, mycel from production of antibiotics, whey permeat, protein containing liquids.

As aforementioned JEP has expanded its operational business by acquiring the selected business from Dworschak + Eulenstein GmbH related to the supply of pancreas as well as other animal-by-products as raw material for the pharmaceutical industry. The former business with residues was closed due to lack of material from animal based insulin manufacturers or related animal based API.

In the course of the last 2 decades JEP has seen a strong growth of the demand for pancreas for production of enzymes from companies like Abbott, SPL, Nordmark, Enzimas, etc. and JEP participated in this development by offering glands according to the requirement of these companys.

At present JEP collects pancreas and other animal by-products primarely in European countries, store them in rented warehouses and ship them to customers. JEP has a quality assurance system in place with regular control of the slaughterhouses and is HACCP approved.

JEP operates an open cloud ERP system to ensure the necessary tracking and tracing.

JEP’s philosophy is to be the mediator between the pharmaceutical industry and the meat industry to secure the production and supply of animal-by-products.

History of
J.E. Protein-Handelsgesellschaft mbH

The development of JEP is strongly related with the person of Mr. Jürgen Eulenstein as the owner and founder.

Mr. Eulenstein started his business career after university in the procurement department of Hoechst AG (today Sanofi) in February 1975. One of his core products had been pancreas for the manufacturing of pancreatin and insulin.

In 1980 he left Hoechst AG and bought a supplier of Hoechst AG for Pancreas glands to found the company Dworschak + Eulenstein GmbH. This company continued to be a supplier of animal by-products like pancreas, beef lungs mucosa etc. for pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The customers had been e.g. Hoechst AG, Lilly, Novo-Nordisk, Sandoz, Bayer, Nordmark, Solvay (today Abbott). As such worldwide contacts and supplies had been established and a sense to assess the market development to support the sourcing of animal-by-products for our customers in the required volume and quality.

In the 90’s of the last century the management of Dworschak + Eulenstein GmbH decided to strengthen their pet food business to compensate expected losses of the pancreas business related to the shift from animal origin insulin into genetically produced human insulin. Dworschak + Eulenstein GmbH also expanded the market shares of pancreas for enzymes as API (like Sandoz, Nordmark, SPL or Abbott etc.) but finally these decisions did not reach a level of financial contribution to compensate the loss of the insulin business.

As such Dworschak + Eulenstein GmbH was liquidated in 2003. However the remaining pharmaceutical segment with pork pancreas for enzyme manufacturers and some other related animal-by-products had been transferred to JEP.
